SS2VR

A virtual-reality mod for System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

Stereoscopic · Motion Controls · Roomscale

// The Mod

SS2VR brings the von Braun into full virtual reality. It injects a stereoscopic, head-tracked renderer into the Nightdive KEX remaster and routes your motion controllers straight into the game — so you can look, aim, and reach the way SHODAN never intended.

Requires: System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster · an OpenXR-capable headset/runtime. Early build — expect rough edges while features land.

// Installation

  1. Own and install System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster (Steam).
  2. Set up an OpenXR runtime for your headset (e.g. Virtual Desktop / SteamVR) and put the headset on.
  3. Download the latest SS2VR build below and extract the archive.
  4. Copy the SS2VR files into the game folder as described in the included README.
  5. Launch via the SS2VR injector, then press F12 in-game to start OpenXR and F6 to begin VR submission.
  6. Tune comfort/scale in ss2vr.ini and press F7 to reload settings live.

Full keybinds and config options are documented in the build's README.

// FAQ & Troubleshooting

Which headsets are supported?

Anything with an OpenXR runtime — Meta Quest (via Link, Air Link, or Virtual Desktop), SteamVR headsets (Index, Vive, etc.), and Windows Mixed Reality through its OpenXR runtime. Make sure your runtime is running before you launch.

The game launches flat — I don't see anything in my headset.

Make sure your OpenXR runtime is active, then in-game press F12 to start OpenXR and F6 to begin VR submission. If nothing happens, check logs/ss2vr.log for the OpenXR init lines.

Everything feels too big or too small.

Adjust world_scale in ss2vr.ini and press F7 to reload live. Larger values shrink the world; smaller values enlarge it. The weapon model has its own scale knob if guns look oversized.

I get motion sick.

Try snap turning instead of smooth turning, lower the turn speed, and take it slow at first. Comfort options live in ss2vr.ini. Standing/roomscale with frequent breaks helps a lot.

Weapon aiming / motion controls feel off.

VR-native weapon handling and motion-controller aiming are in active development — some of it is still rough. Watch the project updates for progress, and report specifics so they can be tuned.

Does it work with other System Shock 2 mods?

Most Anniversary-edition (Squirrel) mods are compatible since SS2VR layers on top of the KEX engine rather than replacing game content. Load-order conflicts are possible, so add mods one at a time if something breaks.

The game crashes when I load a save.

Launch through the SS2VR injector as described in the README rather than attaching mid-session. Don't enable extra .kpf mods on an existing save unless the README says it's safe.

Is it safe to use? Will I get banned?

SS2VR is a single-player mod with no anti-cheat to worry about. As always, back up your saves before trying any mod.

It's still not working — where do I get help?

Grab logs/ss2vr.log and a description of what you tried, then reach out via the project's community/issue page. The log almost always points at the problem.

If it added something to your playthrough and you'd like to support the work, a coffee on Ko-fi is hugely appreciated — entirely optional, never required.
